M.O.K.O: Me Ora Ka Ora

Presented to you by Moko Ora Wānanga

M.O.K.O is a gathering of creatives, bringing both moko artists and moko enthusiasts together to listen, to share and to discuss ideas in and around the moko world. This gathering also serves as a gateway into te ao toi māori.

As a vehicle for connection, M.O.K.O aims to inspire understanding and awareness of tā moko by sharing stories as told by the artists and those who carry tā moko.

M.O.K.O is also a way of recognising  and acknowledging the contribution of those who paved the way to ensure moko survived.

Te Kaupapa o M.O.K.O.

"Me Ora, Ka Ora" is the whakatauki that encapsulates the aspirations of this wānanga which is also the acronym we have used for M.O.K.O. Me ora, Ka ora loosely translated "it (moko) must survive, it will flourish" which refers to the longevity of the artform acknowledging that, we as moko artists are only temporary custodians who must do absolutely everything within our power to ensure the survival of moko for future generations.

M.O.K.O is a three day event that consists of key note speakers and artists designed to give the listeners an insight into their moko journey and the trials and tribulations they faced along the way.  The stories shared are aimed to create more awareness and a deeper understanding of moko.

M.O.K.O is a call to realise dreams, to revel in toi māori and ensure those who attend come away feeling inspired and amazed by all the stories and art shared by all. The aim of this symposium is to strengthen and promote Tā moko, Toi Māori, Māori culture and reo māori as the world class art forms that they are.
